El Paso Police Move to Block Release of Evidence in Dog/Cat Pound Deaths

Last month, PETA released photographs given to them by a whistleblower at the El Paso, TX, pound. The photographs show dogs being mauled by other dogs, one dead puppy covered in blood with one forelimb gnawed completely to the bone and the other partially eaten. (To view that photograph, click here.) They also show the dead cat posted above. In a letter to the City of El Paso, PETA — which itself kills thousands of…

Lawsuit: St. Louis County Pound Illegally Silences Volunteers

Photo courtesy of St. Louis County SAVE: volunteers are the eyes, ears, and hearts of a community. Silencing volunteers renders the death of animals invisible. The officials who oversee the St. Louis County, MO, pound are not just dishonest. They don’t just violate the law. They kill animals in the face of cost-effectively, readily-available lifesaving alternatives they refuse to implement. And when volunteers speak out about it, they are fired. But volunteers are fighting back.…

Horror at an El Paso Kill Shelter

PETA’s call for a criminal investigation was warranted, but so is the need for an earnest campaign to reform the shelter and bring it and its cruel, outdated practices into the 21st century, as many communities throughout Texas have already done. Given to them by a whistleblower, PETA has released photographs showing conditions inside the El Paso, TX, pound that can only be described as horrific. The photographs show dogs being mauled by other dogs,…

OC Cat “Rescue Groups” Become a Threat to Cats/Kittens

The Orange County, CA, animal shelter has been served with a cease and desist letter, a precursor to litigation. According to a news report, “The letter takes issue with a program at OC Animal Care, where stray felines are returned to the community after shelter stays rather than being housed longer for adoption. The letter likens the practice to ‘animal abandonment.’” “But OC Animal Care says the program, which is known as Return to Field,…

Co-opting the No Kill Movement

A kitten at the Madison County pound. Over half of the cats who enter the front door go out the back door in garbage bags. The Madison County, VA, pound kills over half the cats it takes in. And yet it calls itself a “No Kill” shelter, assuring people that cats they bring in will be guaranteed a home. And when it kills their cats, it lies to them by claiming they were adopted. Now…

Michigan just announced it is a No Kill state. It isn’t.

Delaware announced they were the first No Kill state in the country. Now Michigan is saying they are a No Kill state, too, and they did it first. Neither claim is true. Some pounds in Michigan kill more than seven out of 10 cats. And yet some are calling Michigan a No Kill state. The pound in St. Clair County, MI, killed more cats than they placed: 53%. The pound in Berrien County, MI, killed…

Maricopa County Fires Volunteer “Whistleblowers”

Earlier this month, “multiple Phoenix TV stations reported that the temperatures inside the county’s west shelter topped 100 degrees, citing photos [taken by volunteers] sent to the stations showing hand thermometers with temperatures reading as high as 108 degrees.” According to volunteers, Maricopa County, Management knew that it had been a problem last year and new swamp coolers had been ordered. A few were replaced, however the remaining weren’t due to be replaced until September…

Delaware is NOT Yet a No Kill State

Then Delaware Gov. Jack Markell signing a modified version of the No Kill Advocacy Center’s Companion Animal Protection Act into law; a law that the Office of Animal Welfare, the state agency which oversees sheltering in the state, credited with having “improved the quality of care animals receive in shelters and has saved thousands of animals that would have otherwise been euthanized due to outdated policies and practices.” In 2010, Delaware’s brick and mortar shelters,…

Socially Unconscionable Sheltering

Los Angeles County’s Animal Care & Control has long been a kill-oriented, poorly managed, house of horrors. Rather than reform cruel practices and embrace the No Kill philosophy, it is trying to fend off criticism by hiding behind euphemisms. The latest? “Socially Conscious Animal Sheltering.” A rabbit furiously tries to drink water from an empty container at Los Angeles County Animal Care & Control. This follows promised reforms after what has become known as “Spinal…

NYC Pound’s “Criminal” Conduct Results in Brutal Dog Death

The New York City pound, long a bastion of incompetence, corruption, and uncaring, killed Don (pictured here) and caused another dog to suffer, because it transported them in extreme heat and failed to follow minimum, humane procedures. It was “the hottest weekend the Big Apple has seen in nearly a decade.” So hot, in fact, that the New York City triathlon was cancelled for the first time in its history. The OZY fest in central…
