Dogs identified as “pit bulls” are welcome again in Liberal, KS. Radcliff, KY, will vote on a bill to ban continuous dog chaining. A nationwide class action lawsuit has been filed against Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc., makers of Sportmix, for selling poisonous food that killed hundreds of dogs. Marshall County, AL, volunteers say they have been fired for alleging “malfeasance” at the pound. The number of communities placing over 95% of the animals and as high as 99% is increasing. Meanwhile, PETA continues to kill the vast majority of animals it takes in. A new book falsely claims that dogs are being killed because of white supremacy, patriarchy, and capitalist exploitation. And finally, over a dozen residents and former residents of North Dakota have filed a Federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Williston for violating their constitutional rights by arbitrarily banning dogs the City claims are “pit bulls.”
In case you missed it:
- Out of the shadows and into the sun. Dogs identified as “pit bulls” are welcome again in Liberal, KS. The City Council voted to overturn the prior ban.
- Radcliff, KY, will vote on a bill to ban continuous dog chaining.
- A nationwide class action lawsuit has been filed against Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc., makers of Sportmix, for selling poisonous food that killed hundreds of dogs.
- Marshall County, AL, volunteers say they have been fired for alleging “malfeasance” at the pound. If true, retaliatory firing is a violation of Federal law and their constitutional rights.
The number of communities placing over 95% and as high as 99% of the animals is increasing:
- Camano Island, WA, reported a 99% placement rate for dogs, 97% for cats, and 100% for guinea pigs and other animals. For dogs and other small animals, it’s part of the most exclusive club in the movement — those placing 99% or more of the animals.
- Likewise, Brown County, IN, reported a 99% placement rate for dogs and 99% for cats.
- Petaluma, CA, reported a 99% placement rate for dogs and 97% for cats.
- Kitsap County, WA, reported a 99% placement rate for dogs, 96% for cats, and 97% for rabbits and other small animals.
- Rosenberg, TX, reported a 98% placement rate for dogs, 94% for cats, and 100% for other small animals.
- Flathead County, MT, reported a 98% placement rate for dogs and 96% for cats.
- Whidbey Island, WA, reported a 95% placement rate for dogs and 96% for cats.
- Marquette, MI, reported a placement rate of 96% for dogs, 98% for cats, and 98% for rabbits, hamsters, and other small animals. It is one of the communities highlighted in Redemption, our free documentary film about the No Kill revolution in America.
These shelters and the data nationally prove that animals are NOT dying in pounds because there are too many or too few homes or people don’t want the animals. They are dying because people in those pounds are killing them. Replace those people, implement the No Kill Equation, and we can be a No Kill nation today.
- Meanwhile, PETA continues to kill the vast majority of animals it takes in.
- The Lives and Deaths of Shelter Animals — a new book — claims that dogs are being killed because of white supremacy, patriarchy, and capitalist exploitation. The premise is not only factually incorrect, it embraces racist stereotypes, ignores proven solutions, and puts dogs at risk.
And finally, over a dozen residents and former residents of North Dakota have filed a Federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Williston for violating their constitutional rights by arbitrarily banning dogs the City claims are “pit bulls.” Some of the plaintiff’s dogs were killed, others were forced to relocate their dogs in order to avoid their killing, and still others are being threatened with fines and imprisonment and having their dogs killed.
